A Sikh reporter threw a shoe at the Indian home minister (Mr. Chidambaram) during a news conference after he was angered over the minister's reply to a question. Palaniappan Chidambaram was speaking in Delhi about 1984 riots in which hundreds of Sikhs were killed. Witnesses say the minister appeared unfazed by the attack which was similar to a shoe-throwing attack on former US President Bush in Iraq.

Govt seeks legal opinion on CBI plea to prosecute Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government Wednesday sought legal opinion on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking the governor's sanction to prosecute Pinarayi Vijayan, a ruling party leader and former minister, for a scam.

The government has sought the opinion from Advoca

te General C.P. Sudhakara Prasad, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting.

Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Vijayan has been accused of wrongly awarding contracts to Canadian company SNC Lavalin for renovating two hydro-power projects 12 years ago when he was power minister.

The CBI last month wrote to Kerala Governor R.S. Gavai seeking permission to prosecute Vijayan. According to rules, the governor's permission is necessary to prosecute a minister or a former minister.

Meanwhile, an NGO has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court, arguing that sanction was not needed to launch prosecution in a corruption case.

A division bench of the court Monday heard the petition and sent notices to Vijayan and two others for their replies. The case is posted for Monday.

എണ്ണവിതരണത്തിന്റെ 25 ശതമാനം നടത്തുന്ന
ബി.പി.സി.എലിലെ ജീവനക്കാര്‍ സമരത്തില്‍ നിന്നും
പിന്‍മാറിയതായി അറിയിപ്പുണ്ട്‌. തിരുവനന്തപുരം
കൊച്ചുവേളിയിലുള്ള ബി.പി.സി.എല്‍. ഫില്ലിംഗ്‌
യൂണിറ്റ്‌ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ആരംഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.

എന്നാല്‍ വാര്‍ത്ത സമരക്കാര്‍ നിഷേധിച്ചു. മറ്റൊരു
കമ്പനിയായ എച്ച്‌.പി.സി.എലില്‍ സമരമില്ല.
സമരത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന 5,000 ത്തോളം വരുന്ന

ജോലിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചുവെന്നാണ്‌ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുകള്‍.

പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായി നിലച്ചിരുന്നു. വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍
നേരിട്ട ഇന്ധന ക്ഷാമം ഗതാഗതത്തെയും വ്യോമ ഗതാഗതത്തെയും
ബാധിച്ചു. ഇന്ധന ക്ഷാമം മൂലം വെള്ളിയാഴ്‌ച വൈകീട്ടുമുതല്‍

Long queues for fuel as petrol pumps run out of stocks

Kerala: Long queues were seen outside petrol pumps across the country as alarmed vehicle owners tried to stock up on fuel as petrol vends started to run dry Thursday on the second day of a nationwide strike by employees of public sector oil companies.

Many leaders of the agitating workers went underground fearing arrests under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), which many state governments invoked to tackle the employees' strike which the Delhi High Court has ruled illegal.

The oil sector officers' association, an umbrella organisation of 45,000 employees in the public oil sector companies, called for an indefinite strike from Wednesday to force the government to give them wage hikes.

But consumers have already started feeling the impact. A large number of petrol vends ran out of stocks after they did not get replenishments of petroleum products.

Traffic jams were witnessed at several places in the State Thursday evening as people queued up with their vehicles at retail petrol vends fearing they would not get fuel on Friday.

PM dedicates Ezhimala Naval Academy

Ezhimala (Kerala): Dedicating the Indian Naval Academy here, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Thursday that the Indian Navy has a key role in protecting the country from threats coming across the sea.

All through his brief speech, Singh stressed upon the threats from across the sea and urged the Navy to develop credible strategies to counter these threats.

"There is a marked increase by terror groups using the blue waters and this is a cause of concern," he said, adding the Navy, Coast Guard and intelligence agencies must coordinate effectively.

Also both the Navy and Coast Guard should have the best equipment as well as training, Singh said.

"The modernization of the Indian Navy will go ahead and the number of naval exercises we had with our friendly countries has helped the Navy a lot," added Singh.

"Moreover, we have close relations with countries in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The Middle East is part of our valued neighbourhood and they look upon India as they know who they can depend on," the Prime Minister said, asking the Navy has to be fully prepared.

Speaking on the occasion, Defence Minister A.K. Antony recalled that he was fortunate to be here for the dedication, because he had also been there when the foundation stone was laid.

The academy at Ezhimala in Kannur district, the foundation stone for which was laid way back in 1987 by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, has become a reality after 22 years.

"Kerala, among all other states, has been the best friend of the Navy because half a century back, Navy set up its establishment at Kochi. Moreover, this unit will now be a friend for the fisher folk when they go out to sea for fishing, especially during the rainy season," he said.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy also took part in the function.

The Rs.7.21 billion ($149 million) naval school will conduct B.Tech courses for 750 cadets and commissioned officers from the academic session commencing next year.

The engineering programmes at the academy have been drawn up by the Indian Navy with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The nearly 2,500-acre sprawling academy is situated on a promontory that was the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings. It was a flourishing sea port and centre of trade in ancient Kerala and one of the major battle fields during Chola-Chera war in the 11th century. It is believed that Lord Buddha also visited Ezhimala.
